Welcome to the Blog Tour for Crater Lake, hosted by Cedar Fort Publishing. I have to say that I enjoyed this book. The characters were fun and easy to relate to. Not to mention the setting was incredible. Take a look at this picture from Steve's blog.

Pretty amazing, isn't it. Back to the book. Some of the transitions were on the rough side for me, but the ending wrapped everything up and left me wondering what the next installment will be. I would recommend this to anyone, especially the younger readers.

I've felt for awhile that if I want to really succeed in the writing world, that I needed to get to know some of these new internet things, i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, Tumblr, etc. As I've attended writing conferences, others have confirmed that feeling and I've tried a little harder to stay on top of it. Then in this month's Nelson Literary Agency's Newsletter, Kristin Nelson said basically the same thing. (I'll share what she said in a moment.)

But that's one more thing to do, you may say. Yes. It is one more thing to do. It's an important thing to do, but it doesn't have to be done all at once. I started with Facebook and got the hang of that. Then of course they change/upgrade/create a new learning curve, but that's another story. Thanks to some encouragement from a friend, I figured out the blogging world and have even ventured into Twitter. I can't say I completely understand all of it, especially the new stuff coming out, but I can say that it's amazing how many people I'm able to reach with just those three things.

This day and age, internet exposure is a must. I'll admitt that I've read a few books, enjoyed them enough to look up the authors webpage/blog, and have gotten really frustrated when there hasn't been one. Frustrated enough to decide not to read any more books by them. (Well, at least for a little while.)

In our busy lives, I know it's hard to squeeze in more time to add something else, but it can be done in the most simple way possible. You don't have to spend hours on it, I don't think. But it is important to use it. In my opinion.

Now, here's what Kristin has to say.

Publishing is shifting and changing so rapidly, even I have no idea what it's going to look like 12 months from now. But one thing has become very clear to me. For authors to really succeed, they absolutely must embrace technology. Not only do they need to embrace it, they need to learn to love itâ€”even if it's not a natural fit.

Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, insert next big thing.

The days of Salinger scribbling furiously in his cabin alone, no communication with the outside world, are long gone. Although I imagine now there will be some story of a reclusive author with no Internet connection making it the old-fashioned way even in this always connected world. *grin*

And embracing technology holds true for agents too.

Seems like ancient history when back in 2003 I bought my first tablet PC (it was a Gateway) so I could read and edit everything electronically. No paper. Queries by email.

My fellow agents thought I was nuts.

I'd drag that eight-pounder around to editor meetings in New York so I wouldn't have to retype my notes post trip.

Eight pounds. That's crazy. Today, the iPad and Kindle Fire weigh mere ounces.

You cannot remain static. And no, I haven't decided to start tweeting, but I have begun a series of video blogs. The learning curve has been steep, but I'm glad I'm doing it. Man, I'm learning so much about my computer's capabilities.

What else do I not know? Time to find out!

Dies Irae Blog Tour, Book Review & International Giveaway

Welcome to the Dies Irae blog tour, book review, giveaway and interview with author Christine Fonseca! Wow! This book had me hooked from the first page to the last. I couldn't put it down and it left me wanting more. I can't wait for the next installment, which happens to be coming out in March! (Do you have to ask if I'm excited? In case you haven't figured it out, I'M EXCITED!!) The characters are unique, distinct and to die for. The story is so tragic it's beautiful. I loved absolutely everything about it. This is definitely one that needs to be on everyone's "Must Read" list.

Here's my interview with Christine.

What made you decide to become a writer? I think a part of me always expected/wanted to be a writer, albeit an unconscious part. I remember fantasizing about living some kind of glamorous life in NYC as a writer when I was in college. Although my life did not follow the paths I thought of back in my twenties, it would seem that I managed to find my way to writing after all. Or, more accurately, writing found me.

Who inspires you? Hands down, my mom. She was incredibly creative and talented in her own right. I grew up hearing her sing, watching her paint, and feeling inspired by her wisdom. Sadly, she passed away just over a year ago, but every time I look at my children, or read some of my stories, I can see her reflected in my life. She continues to inspire my actions, and my work. Daily.

What would you like your readers to get out of your writing? Everything I write, from nonfiction to fiction, comes from an emotional frame of reference. My hope is that somehow I manage to tap into our universal, shared human experience and resonate on a deeply personal level with my readers, an emotional level—whether I am instructing them about gifted kids, spinning a dark and romantic tale, or attempting something a tad more humorous.

Where did this idea come from? The series actually started with the first novel, LACRIMOSA, launching in March 2012. DIES IRAE is a prequel to that story, taking place roughly 3000 years prior. I wanted to explore the relationship between Mikayel and Azzaziel(Azza)– two characters that are the driving force behind the main characters of LACRIMOSA. So, I took a snippet of a story that is in the novel and wove into this novella; something that has forever changed my point of view on the entire series.

Who was your favorite character to develop? That is a hard one—I really enjoyed developing both Mikayel and Azza. But I was most surprised, I think, by Azza. He is so much more complex, so much deeper and richer than I anticipated. His motivations are different too—something that forced me to relook at the entire series and revamp how he was portrayed in LACRIMOSA.

Any advice for aspiring authors? Focus on your craft, first and foremost. Don’t rush the process. Learn and write. Write and learn. And then have others—not your friends or family—shred your work. Then repeat the process. The rest, the publishing and marketing, will come. But you will have no longevity in the business if you lose track of your primary purpose: Crafting a great story.

What can we expect next from you? The first novel, LACRIMOSA, comes out in March, followed by LIBERA ME in the fall and REQUIEM early next year. After that, who knows! I am currently outlining a companion series, as well as writing a couple of YA psychological thrillers.

Thanks for stopping by on this blog tour, book review, and giveaway! When asked to join this blog tour, I found myself intrigued by the subject. Someday we all want to have the ability to retire—some sooner than others. I wanted to see if my plan was anywhere close to what it should be and hopefully learn something new along the way. It's been my experience whenever I've spoken with finacial people, I find my head spinning, wondering what language they're speaking. So I braced myself for that same type of experience with this book. I was pleasantly surprised that I could understand most of it. John takes the technical aspects of the finacial world and makes it understandable. In reality I found this book enjoyable to read, as long as I didn't try to read too much at one time. One or two chapters was enough and I had to let it diguest. :)

RetirementQuest explained pitfalls to watch out for, what drive the media has in investing, the type of advice to be wary of. It gave me several things to look into myself and for me, I took away that it is ultimately our responsibility in the long run. I throughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone, especially those starting out or are even halfway to retirement. It gives great guidance and clarity to what can be a very confusing issue. I will definitely be referring back to it in the years to come.

RetirementQuest: Make Better Decisions

What made you decide to become a writer?

I feel that I have a very important message that has the potential to dramatically impact peoples’ lives. I am a financial advisor who cares a great deal about my clients, profession, and community, and I am pained to watch people make some very costly, yet common mistakes. In many cases these financial errors are preventable if a person has a minimal level of understanding.

Who inspires you?

I have two major sources of inspiration. My clients would be the first source. It is tremendously fulfilling to know that I have guided so many around the potential calamities of the past two decades, including such debacles as the dot com bubble burst and the real estate implosion. Sadly, my other source of inspiration comes from the inexcusable state of the financial services industry. Now don’t get me wrong, there are many excellent advisors around our great nation who hold their client interests first and foremost it is not them who inspire nearly as much as some others. In this case I am referring to a negative inspiration; my blood simply boils when I hear the snake-oil sales pitches which are all too common in the current state of the financial services industry. Built on an industrial revolution era business model, many of these slick suited dinosaurs simply see their clients (and potential clients) as a convenient means to make a quick buck. They tell half-truths, churn, bully, deceive, and abuse the trust that millions place in them. Then they simply ramp up their marketing efforts to find their next victim. They seem quite immune to any sense of morality by recommending dot com stocks to a retiree and knowing that it caused them to lose most of their life savings, then recommending real estate partnerships which often resulted in the loss of the rest of any remaining nest egg. In many cases those same so-called “advisors” now hulk gold as the next can’t miss opportunity, or annuities with smoke and mirror promises of free money and too good to believe rates of interest.

What would you like your readers to get out of your writing?

I hope to empower my readers with a lifetime of better financial decision making. In particular I have sought to detail the pervasive shortcomings of the financial services industry and compare them to a newer and better model which puts clients first (known as fiduciary). In so doing I hope that my readers will be able to tell the difference and be in a better position to avoid the financial vampires who suck the financial life-blood out of their victims.

Secondly, I hope to make my readers better investors. This does not require advanced expertise, simply a lay understanding of a few core concepts. By grasping these basics and understanding how the media tends to hype dangerous trends, investors may just be able to side step some of those most avoidable (and common) mistakes.

Where did this idea come from?

The idea for this book is based upon my twenty years as a financial advisor, but was spurred by the hysteria that swirled around the events of the financial crises which made itself known in fall of 2008. I tried in vain to raise warning flags regarding the obvious bubble that was welling up in the real estate markets. While I am quite proud that I was able to steer my clients away from making tragic mistakes in this regard, I was nonetheless frustrated that I could not reach a broader audience. My many letters to editors, article submissions, and requests for media interviews all fell on deaf ears; it seems that all the media was interested in at that time were stories that confirmed the nation’s manic belief that real estate was a sure bet investment. As the events unfolded, messages became dominated so-called news that was often little more than masked political spin doctoring or clever manipulations by those previously mentioned financial vampires. It soon became clear to me that people needed a calm voice of reason.

Any advice for aspiring authors?

If your writing is focused on a regulated industry, make sure you submit your manuscript to your compliance team early and often. When I first discussed this with my compliance department they asked that I have the book blocked before sending it to them. While there was logic behind the request, since certain disclosure needed to appear on the same page as the related text, it still caused a great deal of expense and delay as we had to redesign the book a number of times in order to incorporate or reword required disclosures and then again to get them on the same page as the required text. Had I sent the manuscript in advance we could have had the disclosure language correct from the beginning and that would have resulted in less revisions.

I have a financial education website www.Retirementquest.com which complements the book a great deal. My next project is to add videos to the site which will verbally and visually explain some of the charts, graphs, and more complicated details from the book.

It contained the 18 most popular writing articles of 2011. You should check it out. Here's one that caught my attention pretty quickly. It's short, simple, and too the point.

In a thought-provoking ThrillerFest panel, four popular authors shared what they believe to be the deadly sins of the writing craft. Here are seven of their offerings. Have you committed any of them?

1. Laziness
(David Hewson, author of the Nic Costa series)
Intellectual laziness is something all writers are prone to: as in writing the same type of book, and doing it annually. “I think you really have to fight against laziness and constantly keep challenging yourself.” Like great art, books aren’t ever finished—they’re abandoned. (In other words, don’t just finish writing your first draft and call it a day.)

2. Trying to be a good student
(Lisa Gardner, author of The Killing Hour)
Gardner said it’s a thrill to rope a lot of cool forensic facts in the research process. But the danger is in going home and regurgitating all of them in your novel—“When really thrillers are all about entertaining. …” Keep that story moving forward.

3. Marching down the outline
(John Sandford, author of Buried Prey)
This occurs when you sit down to write and follow your outline exactly. Sandford said some people use an outline like a frame, and merely embroider within it. Outlining is fine, but sticking too closely to it can stifle your story. “If you do outline, you have to be aware of the problems that that kind of thing can cause.”

4. Denying jealousy
(M.J. Rose, author of The Hypnotist)
“I try to not allow myself to be jealous of other writers and the books they’ve written,” Rose said—but in fact, she believes it’s a good thing to let some of that jealousy seep through. So don’t bottle it up. “I think it’s really healthy to let yourself have the full range of emotions.”

5. Focusing too heavily on the business
(Sandford)
One of Sandford’s friends obsesses over the business end of writing—his friend writes a book, and then gets lost in all of the trappings of business and promotion … “to the exclusion of actually writing novels.”

6. Not reading books
(Rose)
Reading is essential for writers. Rose cited a study that said that 23 percent of people in the United States want to be writers. If all of them read 10 books a year, Rose said, “We’d all be doing a lot better.”

7. Imitation
(Hewson)
There is a difference between imitating a book, and being influenced by a book. Hewson added that it’s valuable to figure out why you think certain things work in the books you read, and why others don’t.

Book Review--Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Free Throws

Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Free Throws by Janette Rallison. I love Janette's books. I have yet to read one that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed and this one is no exception. The characters were so lovable and I could relate to them. I laughed so hard I cried. This is a great read for any and everyone of all ages. It sure takes you back to those days. Going head-to-head with your best friend is never easy, on the court or off. Josie loves hottie Ethan Lancaster, the captain of the basketball team, but she never can do or say the right thing in front of him. Book Review--Wanted: Dead or Alive

Wanted: Dead or Alive by Samantha Jillian Bayarr. This book was not what I expected. With a title like Wanted: Dead or Alive, I expected something with more action, but it turned out to be a romance. That's probably my fault for not reading the back cover, but that's alright. The characters were easy to relate to and the story flowed nicely. I would have liked a little more conflict in the plot or at least to feel more tension throughout, but overall it was an enjoyable read. It was a clean romance that gave me the a sense of what life was like in Tombstone at the time. I can recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good, clean romance.

A New Year With New Insights

I've often used the phrases, "You have all the time in the world." or "If you really wanted to, you could." or "You can make time for anything." When I've used them, people have been polite, but I got the sense they were trying to stop an eye roll. In the past little while I've come to understand the hesitation in people and the temptation to eye roll when a phrase like that is used.

Time has a way of leaving me/us behind. I can never seem to get everything done and I wonder what I'm doing wrong. Recently, a friend said she feels like no she's having to make choices of what needs aren't going to be met. That just shows me how thin we spread ourselves and why some people don't like to hear that, "If you really wanted to, you could."

These phrases have been running through my head as I'm trying to figure out how and why my writing seems to have come to a halt at the moment. I ask myself where the time goes and wonder why I can't get everything done. Do I really have all the time in the world? Can I really make time for anything? I've doubted what my usual answer would be, but now I can answer confidently with a yes. I do have all the time in the world and yes, I can make time for anything.

It's lifted a burden from my shoulders as I've realized the answer to those questions. And as I analyze how I'm using my time, I'm chosing to be doing other things at the moment. Other things that are currently more important than my writing for now. I could chose to use my time differently and get that final edit done. I could chose to get those two new stories, that are driving me nuts in my head, down on paper. I could chose to do a lot of things, but at what sacrifice?

Right now, as much as I want to be writing, it's not worth the sacrifice. There are other things that are taking presidence. Sarah M Eden said essentially the same thing. She planned on doing a ton of writing one summer and ended up not getting anything done, because her kids needed her. She didn't kick herself or regret not getting it done, she just did the more important thing at the moment and made up the difference later. The other profound statement she made was to remember that even writing in a journal (or a blog post) is considered writing.

So even though my WIP is not where I'd like it to be, I'm comforted in the fact that it really is my choice. I'm still writing on a daily basis even though it may not be exactly what I had in mind. With the new year well under way, don't forget that we can truly choose how we use our precious time. It may not be exactly how we'd like to spend that time, but it is probably what is needed at the moment. Take comfort in the fact that I/you/we are doing exactly what we should be doing. At least it's making me feel better about things. :)

Book Review and Giveaway--Identity

Identity by Betsy Love. The cover is really what pulled me in on this book. The title really gives you a good idea of what at least some of the plot will be. I thoroughly enjoyed each character, even though I kind of guessed what was going to happen. I loved the flow and ease of reading it. There were twists and turns that keep the action moving and kept me turning the pages. This is a book that anyone would enjoy. Make sure to take a look at the interview with Betsy below!

What made you decide to become a writer?

I've always loved telling stories..and writing them down. To me everything is either a great scene from a book, a fascinating character, or an intriguing book title. I write because if I didn't, I think my brain would explode with all the stuff in my head.

Who inspires you?

My husband inspires and torments me. When he comes home from work he likes for me to read to him what I've written. When I'm through he says, "Is that all?" Like I'm supposed to complete the entire story in one day.

What would you like your readers to get out of your writing?

I always include themes of love of God, family and gospel principles. I hope that not only will readers enjoy a good story I hope they will come away edified by what I've written.

Where did this idea come from?

When I was about ten years old my mother started reading a story to me with a similar plot. She never finished the story. Years later I was telling my ten year old daughter, Sarah, about it and commiserating about never knowing how the story ended. She said, "Why don't you write your own ending." Brilliant! So I did, giving it an LDS twist.

Who was your favorite character to develop?

It would probably have to be my "bad guy". Who would have known he/she would have been so dastardly in the end? In fact I am so intrigued by this character that I had to leave it open to write a sequel.

Any advice for aspiring authors?

Don't give up! Get lots of feedback from beta readers (and I'm not talking Mom and your best friend--they won't give you the critique that will truly help you.) Join a critique group, develop thick skin when you get harsh critiques. Take a good look at what they say, and find ways to improve.

What can we expect next from you?

In the Spring I have a Book of Mormon novel coming out. It's call SOULFIRE. You can learn more about it by going to soulfirenovel.blogspot.com. I also have several other novels in various stages of completion. A YA fantasy trilogy, a regular YA, and two more mystery suspense.

Book Review--Smokescreen

Smokescreen by Traci Hunter Abramson. I've enjoyed Traci's books, but I had a hard time with Taylor. I didn't feel like she was worried enough when there were people after her. I liked Quinn and I learned a lot about Navy SEALs. Once I got past Taylor's chapters, things moved better for me. It was clean, fun read despite my frustrations. I would recommend it to anyone. Hi! Thanks for inviting me to guest blog about my FREE MEN and DREAMERS books.

I’m from Maryland, but about 14 years ago, I fell in love with historic Williamsburg. There is a sacred spirit there, one felt also in other places that welcomed the great patriots—Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Franklin, Key, and others—cities like Philadelphia, Washington, and Georgetown; and places like Fort McHenry, Hampton, Craney Island, Fort Monroe, and dozens more.

I believe it’s because God’s hand was over the events that happened in these places, moving people where they needed to be in order to accomplish His purposes for this land.

The past eight years of my research and writing have focused on an incredibly fascinating, and rather forgotten, generation of Americans. Most of us know a bit about the Revolution, and we have some basic understanding of the issues that drove us into the Civil War, but far fewer know anything concrete about the War of 1812, and yet historians will tell you that it was this period and these events that finally forged us into The United States of America.

The idea for a historic novel began back in 1998 after my first visit to Williamsburg, but I set it aside and moved on to another project. After 9/11, my heart, like most Americans', turned more tenderly to America and her history. By 2004 I submitted the first draft.

The original manuscript was set in the late 1840’s, but after much soul searching, many hours buried in American history, and a small mention in Lucy Mack Smith’s “Biography of Joseph Smith,” I knew I needed to back the books up a generation.

It was Lucy’s reference to her brother Stephen Mack’s service during the War of 1812 that was the deal-breaker. I had never before made the connection between the Smiths and the War of 1812, but there it was! Joseph Smith grew up during that war. He and his generation were affected and shaped by the critical historic events of the tragic burning of Washington, the critical Battle of Baltimore, Key’s rallying of a broken nation with his writing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The generation that would take on Britain’s war machine in the War of 1812 was already unique in that they were the children of the Founding Fathers’ generation. They were the heirs of the great patriots’ vision, those charged to build a nation founded on the lofty principles of liberty and freedom, and now they would experience the great religious reformation and the Restoration led by Joseph Smith.

After eight years of research and rewrites, it is this generation’s story that I tell in my FREE MEN and DREAMERS books where we wind six fictional families—three American, two British, one slave—through carefully researched American history to illustrate the courage, sacrifice, and vision of this extraordinary group.

Our protagonist in the series is Jed Pearson, a moral but logical man who has aligned his course upon the strength and stability of government. But new, illogical, religious concepts threaten his tidy world, and despite his efforts to dismiss them, he cannot, setting the stage for a spiritual awakening that will test his faith in both God and the Constitution.

From chapter 29:

The Pearsons arrived in Washington City in July, well before Jed

was scheduled to be seated in the Senate, but not too early to receive

his first assignment from his friend, Senator Timothy Shepard, who

had been asked to assist Washington’s Mayor Weightman’s Jubilee

of Independence Committee, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the

signing of the Declaration of Independence. Timothy quickly secured

Jed’s help.

“First things first,” Timothy began. “Congress commissioned four

paintings by John Trumball which will be hung in the Rotunda for the

celebration. The capstone of the celebration is his grand mural titled

The Declaration of Independence, depicting the five writers of the

declaration presenting the draft to their colleagues. Here’s a sketch.”

Jed studied the five images in the center of the sketch. The first

three were easily recognizable—Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John

Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania—but

the last two required greater thought. “I’m embarrassed to say I can’t

remember these two members of the drafting committee, nor some

of the other signers.”

“Roger Sherman of Connecticut, and Robert Livingston of New

York, but I can’t name some of the signers anymore. I wonder if

future generations will learn their names and know the risk they

took when they mutually pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their

sacred honor.”

Jed grew wistful at the thought. “So few of them are yet alive.”

“Charles Carroll is well, but Presidents Jefferson and Adams are

in failing health.”

“It’s remarkable to consider what that generation achieved in

fifty years, and yet the cost has been high. Two hundred and fifty

years ago the Indians roamed free in virgin forests and welcomed the

settlers. Now we are at war with them in many corners.”

“We fear them and they don’t trust us, often with good cause,”

Timothy said.

“If only we could share the land and live in peace, but we each

have very different visions for America. It’s rumored Andrew Jackson

will relocate the Indians west if elected president. As much as I love

what we’re building here, I can’t feel good about that.”

“It was a primitive new world when the first settlers arrived, as

if God hid it in His hand for millennia for a special purpose. I think

His hand has ever been and still is over this land.”

“And what do you think His purpose is? Even the Founders

couldn’t agree on religion.”

“They differed on the details, but they all believed in Christ.

Religion was and is still evolving here since the break with Europe.

Perhaps they purposely kept the language vague in order to

accommodate what might yet be.”

“Like a visit from God?”

Timothy scowled at Jed. “What?”

Flushing red, Jed wished he could retract the comment. “Don’t

mind me.”

“No, tell me. Who claims to have been visited by God?”

“A young man named Joseph Smith. Hannah is quite taken with

him.”

“But you doubt him?”

Jed leaned back slightly. “Do you believe God would condescend

to come to earth and visit a young man today in response to a

prayer?”

Timothy pondered the question a moment. Jed watched his face

soften as he thought. “I don’t know, but if God wanted to do such

a thing, I think this is where He would choose to do it. Religion

needs freedom to flourish, Jed, and I believe God helped us establish

and preserve ours. Now He’s blessed us with a decade of relative

prosperity and peace. If He wanted to open the heavens and speak, I

think He would do it here, and this might be the time.”

Book Review--Darkest Mercy

Darkest Mercy by Melissa Marr is the conclusion of the Wicked Lovely series. I have always been fascinated with the true nature and stories of faeries. This series has held my interest from the very beginning. Darkest Mercy was no exception. I loved how Melissa wrapped everything up and even put a nice bow on it. This was one series that I smiled at the end of the book feeling complete, not wanting to know more. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the non-Disneyfied faeries. There was a little bit of language in it. Here's a blurb and the book trailer.

Book Review--Curse of the Elfs

Curse of the Elfs by Anna del C. Dye. This book grabbed my attention in the beginning. The world of the elves was set up very well and I enjoyed getting to see that side of them. I felt a connection with the characters throughout. The storyline took turns I didn't expect. It is a clean read that any fantasy lover would enjoy.

Goodbye 2011

I've debated on posting something about goals this time around, but how can I not with it been New Year's Eve Day? My own personal reflection of the past year has really made me reevaluated my goal setting process. For the longest time, I only set goals (or at least wrote them down) when I knew for sure it was something I could accomplish. And "come hell or high water," as the saying goes, I would accomplish that goal.

This year has taught me that may not be the best approach to things. Goals should be set with the mindset that somethings can't be controlled, and if something comes along that's out of our control, it's okay to change a goal midstream. That doesn't make one any less of a person or mean that the goal wasn't accomplished, that just means that life happens and adjustments have to be made.

I recently reviewed a book by Connie Sokol called Faithful, Fit and Fabulous. Connie talked about setting one goal at a time so we don't feel to overwhelmed with things. After a couple of weeks, add another to the mix, but if we do to much at once we can burn ourselves out. I really enjoyed her perspective on things even though it was nothing new to me. She gave me "permission," so to speak, to allow myself to make changes mid-stream. Or maybe she helped me see what I was already doing with my goals from 2011.

Anyway, as we approach a new year, I've been thinking of the baby steps that I'd like to take in all aspects of my life—with the mindset that I can adjust as needed based on what life throws my way. Here are some of my possible goals (which will probably become goals sometime throughout the year).

be less judgemental
cook dinner at least twice a week
finish another edit through my WIP
finish a draft on another WIP
don't complain about housework
keep up with my book reviews
do two blog giveaways a month
attend writing conferences
critic someone else's novel
clean one room a week

The list could go on forever, but I feel like I can be successful at these, and they can be adjusted—if needed—without too much effort. So as you look ahead to the New Year, don't be afraid to set goals because you don't think you'll make it through the year. As you get into it remember they can be adjusted. They are set in stone. Happy New Year 2012!

Book Review--unbroken connections and Cayman Summer

unbroken connection and Cayman Summer by Angela Morrison are both part of the Taken By Storm Saga. I really enjoyed Michael and Leesie's story. It felt real with all the challenges that they both faced. I liked how they each helped each other through tragedies and were a support. The growth was incredible on both parts. I also really enjoyed the locations, especially in Cayman Summer and Thailand from unbroken connections. I learned a lot about places I've never been. This was a very fun read that I thoroughly enjoyed, but can't say I can recommend it to everyone because of the content. Book Review--Bumpy Landings

Bumpy Landings by Donald J Carey. I enjoyed this book. It turned out to be the dating ups and downs of a particular young man that made me laugh and remember the days I spent dating. It was fun to get it from the guys perspective also. And the exotic location of Hawaii really helped the story. As one who has never been, I felt like I was there. This book receives a :):):). What made you decide to become a writer?

I've always loved reading books, but for most of my life music was my 
creative outlet. As I got older and my life situation changed, trying to 
perform with a musical group was more and more difficult. So I tried my 
hand at several other things, and writing was what fit my needs and 
abilities the best.

Who inspires you?

My wife has been so strong over the last decade, battling a serious 
illness that nearly took her from us three years ago. Yet due to her 
persistence and tenacity, she is undergoing a miraculous recovery, 
wrestling her life and health back when most everyone else had given up 
on her. That resilience is infinitely inspiring to me.

What would you like your readers to get out of your writing?

Looking at my writing, I realize that I tend to share things that are 
important to me, like philosophies, cultures, and locations. I love 
hearing that those elements have resonated with a reader. But most of 
all, I want to share an entertaining story, so knowing that I've kept a 
reader up past their bedtime is the perfect payoff for me.

Where did this idea come from?

There are a lot of little ideas that came together to make up Bumpy 
Landings. I've long been interested in flying, so I thought it would be 
fun to write a story about a student pilot. It was a cold February day 
when I decided to set the story in my warm Hawaiian hometown of Laie. 
The main character's journey of self-discovery was based on a similar 
one of my own. And when it comes to unrequited love, I have wealth of 
(long ago) experience to draw from.

Who was your favorite character to develop?

I have to say Malia. She was a fun secondary character who kind of acted 
like the glue to keep the story together, and her attitude allows her to 
say out loud the things that most of us only dare think.

Any advice for aspiring authors?

Writing is a lot of fun, but to do it right it is a lot of work, too. 
Don't be afraid to put in the time and the effort. Make friends in the 
writing community, and bravely put yourself and your words out there for 
others to see. Writing is a solitary activity, but GOOD writing requires 
the help of many people working together.

What can we expect next from you?

I'm currently trying to squeeze out enough writing time to finish Into 
the Wind, which picks up about an hour after Bumpy Landings ends. I had 
no intention of writing a sequel, but I realized that there were enough 
loose ends and unresolved situations to make for a great story. I'm 
having a wonderful time getting to know some of the original characters 
better, and introducing some fun new characters.

Awhile ago, I subscribed to the Nelson Literary Agency's Newsletter. (I would highly recommend hoping over to their website and signing up for their newsletter.) They've consisted of advice from Kristin Nelson about writing trends and such, along with thought from agents on her staff. I've found it very helpful information and it helps me to stay "in the know" as I navigate the publishing world.

In December's newsletter, Anita Mumm (who is coming to our ANWA Conference in February in Phoenix, AZ) wrote a fantastic note on "Smart Persistence." It gave me good insight on whether or not it is proper to re-query an agent and if so, when it's appropriate. Here's what she had to say . . . Enjoy!

Writer's Toolbox: Smart Persistence

One of the most common pieces of advice aspiring writers receive is “don’t take no for an answer.”

We all know that rejection is part of life as a writer, and that tenacity is perhaps the most important quality you can possess. But when doors close in your face, is it okay to knock again? And what steps should you take before doing so?

Unless agents specify that they do not take resubmissions, it is perfectly okay try again. In fact, NLA has signed several clients that at first were not the right fit.

One was Gail Carriger, author of the sexy steampunk PARASOL PROTECTORATEseries, which now includes three NYT bestsellers. Gail first queried Kristin with a young adult novel that she turned. Four years later, remembering the great editorial notes Kristin gave, Gail requeried, Kristin fell in love with the project, and the rest is history.

Then there’s Marie Lu, whose phenomenal YA dystopian novel LEGEND hit shelves November 29. Marie approached Kristin at Pikes Peak Writers Conference several years ago, but didn't quite win her over. When Marie came back with a whole new project, Kristin offered representation, but ultimately couldn't sell it. So what did Marie do? She dusted herself off, wrote another book. . . and watched the series sell in a major auction. A film deal with CBS films and the producers of Twilight was not far behind. That's the power of persistence!

Things to consider before resubmitting:

1. Have you done a SERIOUS rewrite? This is tough to hear, but if your query is getting no attention, or if agents are requesting, then rejecting, your sample or full, there’s probably more to fix than commas and typos. Take it back to your critique group or editor and ask them to take no prisoners! If you see patterns in their advice and you can live with the changes, make them. Regardless, spend months—not days or weeks—working as hard on this new draft as you did on the first. Agents are skeptical when they see rewrite queries almost immediately—how different could this new draft be?

2. Did agents give positive feedback? If an agent says she’d love to see future work from you, she means it—there’s way too much coming through the slushpile for agents to say that lightly. Any advice about things to work on should also be seen as encouragement. Just be sure that if you resubmit to that agency, that particular advice figures into your revision. You don’t need to agree with every agent, but you do want to have the same vision as the one who signs you.

3. Don't be a spammer! There’s a big difference between asking an agent to take another look—and becoming “that writer.” The one who sends the same infernal query letter every day/week/month, wondering how agents just keep missing it. See number 1—time to go back to the drawing board! Then resubmit your query (once) and wait for a response. If you get another rejection, third time is probably not a charm—cut your losses and look for agents who might be a better fit.

Book Review--Twisted

Twisted by Gena Showalter. So I've really enjoyed the Intertwined Series. I love Aden, Mary Ann, Victoria, and Ryley. I love all souls. I love the incidental characters. I love the idea of having souls trapped in your head that have powers that leak to you. Everything about this series has fascinated me. The complex relationships, the voices (in more ways than one), the setting, everything is wonderful. Twisted had me turning pages and as the book slowly got heavy on the left end, the more frustrated I became because I knew I wouldn't like the ending because it would be a cliff hanger . . . and it was. It's so frustrating, but I have to admit that I'll be waiting for the next one. I have to know what happens. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves a good paranormal romance. There is some content (nothing explicit) and one F-bomb. It receives a :):):):). Here's a blurb and the trailer.

Book Review--Faithful, Fit & Fabulous

Faithful, Fit & Fabulous by Connie Sokol. Since my first child was born a year ago, I've been struggling to find my balance. I'm not one who usually reads what I would call "self-help" books. I went through that phase and found them all saying the same thing, but it's been awhile. So when the opportunity came to join this blog tour I jumped on it thinking it might give me some pointers or at least a new angle.

I have to say I really enjoyed this book. Connie keeps the principles simple, straightforward and easy. She doesn't say anything I haven't heard before, but she really emphasized keeping it easy-one thing at a time. After reading it, I felt like most of her techniques I could manage. It left me excited to try and I have implemented a couple of things. So far so good! I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Honestly just about any age would benefit from this book, although it may take the help of a parent for those younger. To Read Out Loud or Not To . . .

You know what I've rediscovered this past little while, is the value of reading books out loud. Lately, I've been reading stories to my little one (particularly the scriptures) as he's playing on the floor or I'm trying to get him to sleep. I'm amazed at how my tongue slips up and I insert words that aren't really there. Phrases just come out the way I think they should and not the way they were actually written. It has really thrown me and I've really begun to appreciate the easy flow of well-written stories. Not only are they easier to read out loud, but I don't find myself tripping over my tongue as often.

So, I've taken that into account as I work on my writing. I've even found myself whispering my sentences and smile when I realize what I'm doing. It's also a great way to get out of a writing slump. Things have become a bit overwhelming (what? overwhelming this time of year? Never!) and my brain doesn't want to function when I sit down to write. More and more in the past few days, I'm turning to reading a chapter or two in order to escape, calm myself, get inspiration, and any other word you'd like to plug in right there.

Remember, part of writing is reading. So don't feel bad when a book calls you rather than your characters. Or you choose to ignore your characters and dive into a good novel. Whatever you do this holiday season, enjoy and Happy Writing or Reading, whichever it may be!

Book Review--River Whispers

River Whispers by Kathi Oram Peterson. I listened to this one over the past few days and have to say it wasn't my favorite, although there were several things I really liked about it. The secondary characters were wonderful. Kathi did a wonderful job painting many different people as a possible suspect and I enjoyed trying to figure it out. I found myself switching suspicion as often as the main character.

For me, the main character was a little bit too much of a busy body and wishy-washy in her own feelings. I understand some people are very head strong and busy bodyish, but I don't think I'd be as forward as Regie in her situation. Overall, the story is well written and enjoyable. I can definitely recommend this one to anyone who likes a good romantic suspense. I enjoyed the story but can't say that I loved it, so it receives a :):):) Here's a blurb and a link to purchase it. Book Review--shiver, linger, forever

shiver, linger, and forever by Maggie Stiefvater. This is a threefer and I've had very mixed feelings on this one. I picked up this series because I met one of the agents that works with Maggie's agent and I loved her. So I've been reading what I can by those authors represented by the Andrea Brown Literary Agency. The covers have made me curious for awhile and meeting this particular agent just gave me the extra push that I needed to read them.

I can't say I was overly impressed with shiver. I thought the storyline was intriguing, but I felt Sam was too unsure of everything. Grace I

felt more attached to but their relationship just didn't sit right with me. However, I liked it enough to continue in the series.

Now linger held me more captive. I loved the chapters from the secondary characters points of view. I loved getting to know them, their attitudes and to me, they kept the story moving. If I had to pick, I'd say I liked Cole and Isabel more than Sam and Grace. This time I didn't feel Grace was what she needed to be. She wasn't as strong as in the first one, but Sam stepped up his game and it ended in such a way that I couldn't not finish the series.

forever had me from the get-go, hook, line, and sinker. I loved it. It solidified my liking of Cole and Isabel even more. I wanted to just skip over Sam and Grace's chapters just to continue their story. Grace's POV as a wolf was definitely more interesting than most her other chapters, however I still prefer Isabel and Cole. I loved their personalities and how Maggie just made then unique. That being said, I hated the ending . . . hated, hated, hated it. I feel like it left things undone and questions unanswered. Unfortunately it almost ruined the series for me.

So overall, shiver gets a :):):), linger a :):):):), and forever :):):):)

I recently attend the Northwest Writer's Retreat in Washington. First off, it was absolutely gorgeous. For us desert rats, I had a turtle neck, jacket, heavy coat, hat, and scarf on. It was a great change from the unseasonable warm weather we were having. At least it made everyone from up there smile. :) The presenters were fabulous and I got some valuable writing time in as well as much needed critics. So here's my shameless plug for it . . . if you haven't gone, you're missing out! Put it on your calendars for next year. (The first weekend in November, I believe).

One thing that has really stuck with me was given my Sarah Eden, the keynote speaker. She was talking about a class given by Jennifer Wolf, where Jennifer reminded Sarah that you have to celebrate along the way. How easily we forget that. We get so wrapped up in that, "When I get this book finished," or "When I get an agent," or "When I get published," or "When I get so many followers on my blog," and the list goes on. We are constantly looking forward and getting bogged down when we can't see the light at the end. That turns to discouragement and stress and in drastic circumstances, quitting or giving up. Don't let that happen!

As a person, we/I need to feel validated in what I'm doing. I think we all do and when we don't we get frustrated. So, we need to remember to celebrate the small stuff. I've really been trying to take this to heart since I've been back and it has helped me in so many areas of life. Here are some of the small things I've celebrated (even if it's been as simple as patting myself on the back, I've acknowledged what I'd completed) . . .

Finishing a revision
Completing a chapter in one of my WIP
Writing a complete thought before the baby wakes up
Reading a chapter in a book
Doing the dishes
Being able to see the floor, even if you have to step over things (my sister and I celebrated this one as she is working on getting a room cleaned out)
Vacuuming
Making my bed
Not getting angry for the small, silly things
Getting to bed before 11
Getting this blog post done

And the list goes on. Looking at this it makes me feel like I've actually done something. I can smile at what I've accomplished, even if it's done the one big goal that I'm working toward. All of these stepping stones are allowing and teaching me how to get there. So when I do, boy am I going to have a party!

So take a moment to celebrate the little things along the way. I'm speaking from experience when I say, it sure makes life a lot more fun!

Book Review--Bitter Blessings

Bitter Blessings by Christine Mehring. This book surprised me. It hooked me from the beginning and kept me turning the pages. The writing was well done, and kept me wondering if I had figured things out. I enjoyed the characters and really felt for Megan and everything that happened to her. I loved seeing the growth she made, but wished the ending had a little more to it. It did remind me that even the hard things are in fact blessings, whether we see them that way or not. I look forward to addition books from Christine. I would recommend this book to any and everyone, especially to those needing a reminder that things can always be worse. :)

Book Review--Light Fixtures

Light Fixtures by Deborah Demoss Smith. Deborah contacted me and ask me to review her book. First of all, I think that's pretty cool that she asked me. Thanks Deborah!

This was a very interesting book. I enjoyed the characters, the setting, and the concept. For once, all of my predictions for how things would turn out were wrong. That made it more interesting for me to read. The concept of needing people to be Light Fixtures, to help us through different things and balance life, I really, really like. Deborah does a great job weaving a story the held me to the end. This book receives a :):):):). I could recommend this book for just about anyone.

Book Review--The Ember Gods

The Ember Gods by Andrea Pearson is part of The Kilenya series. (Check out my review for book one The Key of Kileyna here.) I liked this book a lot more than the first one. I was able to get into it more quickly and it flowed very well. There were more fantastic creatures and I learned a lot more about the characters. I really liked the involvement of Jacob's brother, Matt as well as the twist that happened. I'm excited to see what happens in the next one. This book receives a :):):):). What made you decide to become a writer?

I was serving a mission for my church (The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints), and had only two outlets for expressing emotions: my
journal, and writing home to my family. I discovered a love for words and
their meanings, especially while studying the Spanish language. :-)

Who inspires you?

Bonnie - is this authors who inspire me? Or anyone in general?

Both.

I know he's not in my writing "genre," but Michael Crichton is the very
first to come to my head. He's been one of my favorite authors for a long
time. He really knew how to grip his readers. And I love logical,
scientific type books—he excels at that. Next, J.K. Rowling, for starting
at the bottom of the totem pole and making it so incredibly high up,
maintaining humility through it all. I can't stand arrogant authors. :-)

Anyone in General:
My husband, parents, and readers inspire me a great deal to write new
things that challenge and strengthen my skills. Having a great support
structure really helps!

What would you like your readers to get out of your writing?

Enjoyment. I don't write to teach, I write to entertain. :-) Of course, I
hope they'll want to read more of my books, but I think that's every
writer's goal.

Where did this idea come from?

We used to live in an old house – when I was a kid. I found a skeleton
key, and used to pretend it was magical. I built on that idea over several
years, eventually adding Jacob and Dmitri to the story. For book two, The
Ember Gods, I just continued what I'd started. I knew my ideas would end
up becoming several books in a series – I would need time to explain where
Jacob's abilities came from.

Who was your favorite character to develop?

The Fat Lady. :-) She's based off of a favorite person in the movie
Matilda, and it was so much fun to create her. :-) Also, I've loved
working on Matt's character, and Gallus as well.

Any advice for aspiring authors?

Edit, edit, edit! But don't over edit or you'll remove yourself from the
writing. I did that at one point, and it took a large chunk of time to put
my voice back into the manuscript. There's a fine line to learn, and it's
different for everyone. Also, learn as much as possible about the
publishing world – Indie publishing (going at it on your own, like I am),
or traditional. If you don't understand traditional publishing thoroughly,
don't go the Indie route. (A lot of writers self-publish because they're
afraid of rejection or because they don't want to put the work into
finding representation. I don't recommend doing this.) Make sure you know
where you want to be. Set goals and achieve them. :-)

What can we expect next from you?

Samara: A Kilenya Romance was released today as an eBook (it's a novella,
teen romance), and Book Three, August Fortress, will be out early 2012.

So, I've been messing with my blog settings and now I think my settings are crazy. Oh well. Work on Encoded Secrets is going really well. I'm almost through and have cut close to 13,000 of the 15,000 words I need to get rid of. Kind of an interesting process. Hopefully we'll be up and querying with it soon!

What made you decide to become a writer?

LIZ: I didn’t decide. It just happened. It may be something you just are, like having blue eyes or seeing color in shadows or being able to roll a double R (I can’t).

Who inspires you?

LIZ: My critique group inspires me. They are four incredible women, and I recharge my battery each Thursday evening as we go over the pages each has sent in for a critique. They not only inspire me, they teach me.

What would you like your readers to get out of your writing?

LIZ: A cheap vacation. Seriously, I remember when I was a young mother on a tight budget. I didn’t hate my life. I loved being a mom, but every now and then it was so delicious to read a book that took me to an exotic place where people had conversations on a higher level than Goodnight Moon. That’s what I want to do. My settings might not be exotic, but they’re different, and I hope my dialogue is witty and sharp.

Where did this idea come from?

LIZ: Cold River came out of my experience teaching at Concrete, Washington thirty years ago or so. Concrete is a tiny town in timber country, and the local populace are descendants of people who moved west from North Carolina during the early twentieth century to work in the wood products industry. When I arrived, there hadn’t been much happen there to dilute the cultural or speech patterns the people had brought with them. It’s changed since then, as TV has come to the area, but when I was teaching there, the people called themselves Tarheels and were proud of their North Carolinian heritage.

Who was your favorite character to develop?

LIZ: It’s much more a process of getting to know the characters than developing them. Of course I liked the main character, Mandy Steenburg, who comes to Limestone as a mid-year replacement as superintendent of schools. She has her doctorate, has been on the fast track in Albuquerque’s school administration, and she thinks she knows how to run a school district.

I also liked Vince Lafitte. He grew up in Limestone, but he’s always been an outsider. Illegitimate and poor as a child, he made lots of money blowing up buildings, and he’s invested that money in Limestone, so he’s a force to be reckoned with. He’s handsome in an angular way, a careful dresser, and he’s very interested in Mandy.

I also liked…well, I think I liked them all. Edith Berman who keeps the first aid kit stocked with herbs she’s collected; Nettie Maypole who is angry that the school cook stole her mama’s recipe for Yum Yum Potatoes and now calls them Tarheel Spuds; Mo Smith, the district accountant who looks so nondescript with his thinning hair, rounding shoulders and anemic mustache but who becomes Mandy’s staunch ally. And then there’s Granny Timberlain. Well, you’ll have to read the book.

Any advice for aspiring authors?

LIZ: Yes. First, write, write, write. Next, join a writers group, but pick one that is supportive. Third, get comfortable putting your work out for a critical review. You will never grow as a writer if you don’t ask for feedback.

What can we expect next from you?

LIZ: I’m working on another romantic suspense with a working title Rats in the Attic. I definitely know I’ll change that, but for now I like it. It’s set in southern Nevada, in Spider Latham country.
